The mastermind of Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeff Mangum created one of the defining indie rock albums with 1998's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, pioneering a sound and aesthetic found readily in nearly all of today's like-minded music. Disillusioned by the album's exploding popularity, he split the band and relegated himself into complete obscurity shortly after its release. Now, Mangum is slowly returning to the limelight for a string of small theater shows, playing his Neutral Milk Hotel songs for the first time in more than a decade. His rare performance at Lincoln Theatre this January will be well worth the wait.

Melting Pot
Originally formed in the Sahara desert area of Mali, Tinariwen is a rotating collection of musicians, songwriters and outspoken personas. Supporting their latest album, Tassili, the guitar-centric group is bringing a hard-hitting blend of rock, blues and world music styles to 9:30 Club. Joining them for a co-headlining gig is Australian indie pop band Architecture in Helsinki, known for their eclectic and eccentric mix of instruments. Adding to the recipe of musical flavors, this show also features sets from Swiss folk-pop artist Sophie Hunger, fuzzy indie pop band DOM, and Swedish electro group Lo Fi Fink. That's one brilliant amalgamation of international acts and a rainbow of musical tastes.
