Arizona State of Mind
The two standard members of Calexico, singer/songwriter Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino, have Tucson flowing throughout their being. Says Burns (via NPR): "The fact that we are a border region is really exciting. I like the mix of cultures and language styles and life." That mix really comes out in Calexico's music, especially on Algiers, their latest album of heavily Southwest-tinged Americana. Along with their rise to prominence in their home state, the band (including guitarist Paul Niehaus, multi-instrumentalists Jacob Valenzuela and Martin Wenk, and bassist Volker Zander) continues their climb everywhere else. Don't think twice when it comes to seeing Calexico's fresh blend this Thursday.

Split Personality
"I like breakup records that don't pat you on the back and say 'It's OK. It's going to work out.' I like breakup records that say, 'It's sh*t now, and it's going to suck even worse, but we're in this together.'" - Jens Lekman (via Pitchfork TV)
Somewhere between a heartfelt singer-songwriter and a deadpan stand up comedian lies Jens Lekman. Strumming his guitar and delivering his love-realist lyrics, Lekman peppers his performances with hilarious anecdotes and thoughtful asides. When he plays 9:30 Club this Friday, expect a deeply intimate performance that'll keep you on your toes with some charming humor.

Wild Kind
Ryan Bingham may be best known for his contributions to the 2010 film Crazy Heart. His co-written song with T Bone Burnett, "The Weary Kind", won Golden Globe, Academy, and Grammy Awards for its inclusion in the film, and he also had a small acting part as Tony. While Bingham certainly has the dusty, plaintive songwriting down, his new album, Tomorrowland, features a much more amplified sound. With a new "take no prisoners" attitude, Bingham will play 9:30 Club this Saturday. Take this as a warning that if you want to see this excellent songwriter, you better act post-haste.

Exalted Ones
When supergroup Divine Fits played their first show on August 1st in Austin, Austinist had this to say about Britt Daniel and Dan Boeckner's team-up: "Their styles blend together so well that the highest compliment one can give is that it sounds exactly like one would expect: Daniel's tight attention to detail and Boeckner's guitar heroics/experimental nature played off each other naturally." Throw in some very solid drums from Sam Brown, and Divine Fits have got a highly groovy, sexy set of songs to deploy when they play 9:30 Club. Take a listen for yourself while watching their new video for "Would That Not Be Nice". Then, head to the Club next Thursday for a musical sermon from some true indie rock gods.
Win a Divine Fits meet and greet on the day of the show! Simply send your order confirmation number to contests@930.com for a chance to win.
