Emeli Sandé at Meyerhoff, John Legend at DAR, and more!

New Standard

We could go on and on about the (much-deserved) myriad accolades and tons of buzz surrounding Scottish soul singer Emeli Sandé.  Instead, we'll just link you to this "1 mic 1 take" performance of her single "Next to Me".  We'll keep it simple: it's flawlessly beautiful, and that's exactly the kind of performance that is in store when Sandé plays Meyerhoff this Saturday.  When a voice like that is in the mix, there's nothing but more big things on the way.

The Time is Now

When he's not busy getting married to his supermodel belle or discussing his working relationship with friend Kanye West, John Legend finds the time to create some truly excellent soul music.  His latest album may be titled Love in the Future, but it's very hard not to immediately connect with his romantic piano tunes.  Just look at that photo above; you can tell that man is going to let the love flow at Constitution Hall next Wednesday.  Along with an opening set from Braxton Family Values' own Tamar Braxton, Legend's show will tug at your heartstrings and tantalize your ears.

Raw Power

Last week, we touched on Franz Ferdinand's creepy new video for "Evil Eye".  While the Scots sound great on record, they also excel at performing live, as you can see via this acoustic Deezer Session.  Now, imagine that same intensity, supported by a wall of jangly and angular (jangular?) guitars, all filling Strathmore.  It's hard not to get charged up at the thought.

True Testimonial

"Tuesday’s show saw Fields shifting from ear-popping shrieks to soulful crooning in a heartbeat, and he worked the crowd with a master’s combination of showmanship and sincerity. The Expressions (indie label Truth and Soul’s de facto house band) backed that elemental force of a voice and persona to smoldering perfection, laying down rich beds of velour horns, purring organ, and subtly-funky guitar." - thesunbreak.com's review of Lee Fields and The Expressions' September 17th Seattle show

BlastDismemberment

D.C. O.G.'s

The Dismemberment Plan solidified themselves as one of the original off-the-wall rock acts of the late-1990's/early-2000's.  Though the D.C.-based band called it quits in 2003, they clearly influenced, well, pretty much every forward-thinking indie rock band that has formed in the past decade.  D-Plan regrouped a few years ago and just released a new album, Uncanney Valley.  Their new video for "Waiting" is all the proof you need that they're still a step ahead of the game.  See the trailblazers work it this weekend at 9:30 Club

Anything Goes

Father John Misty (a.k.a J. Tillman) is a pretty out there guy, but in a great way.  Example: on his Facebook page, he has been writing hilarious little poems inspired by his tour stops.  No one can predict what the notorious oddball will write about our town, or even what he will do in between songs while he's on our stage.  Yet when it comes to the music, every review and statement across the board has Father John knocking his aching acoustic laments out of the park.

Fuck Buttons @ U Street Music Hall

U.K. electro duo Fuck Buttons are running a pretty rad contest based around the gold cube-themed artwork for their single "The Red Wing".  You can download a template from their website to create your own gold cube for a chance to snag some tickets.  Even if you don't win, you'll engage the artsy area of your mind.  You'll also prime your brain for the lovely, fuzzy onslaught of beats that Fuck Buttons will let loose at U Street Music Hall this Thursday.

Of Montreal @ U Street Music Hall

Yes, you are reading that headline up there correctly.  Kevin Barnes and the of Montreal collective are indeed playing U Street Music Hall for two nights next week.  Normally the colorful collective is lavishing much larger venues with their vibrant and vivacious rock.  Regardless of which show you see, you can rest assured that U Street Music Hall will be bursting at the seams with psychedelic sounds and sights.
